Members of the Weyburn Pottery Club will be holding a public raku firing event. Raku is an outdoor pottery firing method that is very dramatic. The rewards are high, but the possibility of failure is also high. If art was sport, this is it!
A special, gas fired kiln will be set up inside the outdoor rink at the Credit Union Spark Centre. Members of the Weyburn Pottery Club will fire the kiln to 1800 degrees F, and remove the glowing, red-hot pieces from the kiln using tongs. The blistering hot work will then be placed in a metal container, trapping smoke and ashes in the pottery piece. After 20 minutes, the work will be removed from the metal container and submerged into a large bucket of water until cool. The works will then be scrubbed clean, revealing the finished piece.
Spectators are invited to watch the drama from the safety of outside the rink boards.
Location of this event is subject to change. If we are not in the ODR, we will be set up in the Douglas Road parking lot.
